Key Learnings

Antimicrobial Resistance is a major challenge and a silent bomb in African developing countries.

As Africa is working hard to improve antimicrobial use in management or Microbial infections, we still have a long way to go as regards to preventing antimicrobial resistance. The main cause of antibiotic resistance is antibiotic use. When we use antibiotics, some bacteria die but resistant bacteria can survive and even multiply. The overuse of antibiotics makes resistant bacteria more common. The more we use antibiotics, the more chances bacteria have to become resistant to them.

Activities I have done

In the war against the Superbugs, I have embarked on a campaign to ensure safe disposal of expired drugs. Expired drugs contain the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) and when their disposal is not well controlled, they can contaminate the water and soil which the humans consume and thus AMR.

In addition, my colleagues and I have been working to revive the Medicines Therapeutic Committee   in on Hospital in Central Uganda, Kalisizo Hospital, to ensure Selection of effective, safe, high-quality, and cost-effective pharmaceuticals, ensuring rational medicine use among others.

In conclusion, I appreciate the opportunity that was given to me to be part of the y Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Leaders’ Program for Tertiary Students in Africa.
